| The Greater Killeen-Fort Hood area is a bustling
metroplex of great communities in the heart of beautiful, friendly Central
Texas. Killeen, the largest of the area's cities, has a population of
about 112,000. Fort Hood, adjoining Killeen on the north and west, has
about 40,000 residents (nighttime population), and Copperas Cove, on the west
side of Fort Hood has approximately 30,000 residents. Harker Heights to
Killeen's east side, is over 20,000 population. The area has many churches of nearly every denomination and size. There are numerous civic groups such as Lions Club, Exchange Club, Kiwanis, Rotary, Junior Service League, Wednesday Review and Modern Study Club. Killeen has a large mall with anchor stores including Dillards, J.C. Penney and Sears. There are other shopping centers also in the area plus many others under construction. We have several restaurants both locally owned and franchises with more on the way. Existing examples include Red Lobster, Applebees, Texas Land & Cattle Company, IHOP, Outback Steak House, Texas Roadhouse, Chili's and the fast foods as McDonalds. Three area hospitals serve the area's needs in addition to Fort Hood's Darnall Hospital. Metroplex Hospital is located between Killeen and Copperas Cove and Scott & White Hospital is in Temple (approximately 25 miles from Killeen) and has clinics in Killeen and Belton. King's Daughters Hospital is in Temple and has a clinic in Killeen. Tarlton State University Central Texas and the University of Central Texas are also located between Killeen and Copperas Cove, and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is located in Belton. These schools offer a variety of classes and degrees including masters programs. All this and much more makes up an area diverse in peoples and
cultures, but unified in the support of Fort Hood and its soldiers and
their families.
